AdBlocker Ultimate for macOS: Overview

How AdBlocker Ultimate for macOS blocks ads system-wide across every browser and app on your Mac using a Network Extension.

AdBlocker Ultimate for macOS blocks ads, trackers, and malicious domains across every browser and app on your Mac, not just in Safari. It runs as a macOS Network Extension and filters all supported traffic at the system level, giving you protection in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, email clients, media players, and more from a single app.

Requirements

  • macOS 13 (Ventura) or later

  • Apple Silicon (M1 or later). Intel Macs are not supported.

  • 512 MB RAM minimum

  • 200 MB free disk space

  • Internet connection for filter and security updates

  • 14-day free trial included

Key features

System-wide ad blocking

Filters traffic across all supported apps on your Mac simultaneously. No need to install a separate extension in every browser. Supported browsers include Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, Opera, Arc, Vivaldi, and Tor Browser, as well as email clients, media players, games, and messaging apps.

Network filtering

Blocks connections to ad servers at the network level before they load, resulting in faster performance and lower data usage.

DNS protection

Blocks known ad and tracking domains before any connection is made. Prevents your internet provider from seeing which sites you visit and stops ad networks at the domain level across all apps.

HTTPS filtering

Inspects encrypted HTTPS traffic to block ads and trackers that hide behind secure connections. This requires a locally trusted root certificate, which AdBlocker Ultimate installs into the macOS System keychain during first launch. The certificate stays on your device. Your traffic is never sent to external servers.

Tracker and fingerprint protection

Blocks tracking scripts and disrupts digital fingerprinting techniques that build a profile of your device and behaviour without your consent.

Malware and phishing protection

Blocks connections to domains known to distribute malware or conduct phishing attacks.

Per-application rules

Set filtering rules for individual apps. You can exclude specific applications, such as security tools or banking software, from filtering entirely.

Website exceptions

Easily allow specific websites you want to support or that require ads to function.

First launch setup

On first launch, macOS will ask you to approve two things:

  1. Network Extension: Allows AdBlocker Ultimate to filter your traffic. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and approve the extension if prompted.

  2. Trusted root certificate: Required for HTTPS filtering. You will be asked to approve this during setup. Without it, encrypted traffic cannot be inspected and some ads may not be blocked.

Both approvals are one-time steps. Once done, AdBlocker Ultimate runs in the background automatically.

Common issues

  • Protection not active after install: Check that the Network Extension has been approved in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Network Extensions.

  • Ads still appearing on some sites: Disable protection for that site as a test. If that resolves it, the issue is likely a filter rule conflict or an HTTPS certificate that has not yet been trusted. Contact support with the site URL.

  • App not compatible with Mac: AdBlocker Ultimate for macOS requires Apple Silicon (M1 or later). It does not run on Intel Macs.
